Legislators “In-vested” in Improving Road Worker Safety
A group of state legislators recently donned some eye-catching apparel to help raise awareness about the need for motorists to take special care when driving through work areas. In a cooperative effort with the Delaware Department of Transportation, the members of the House Transportation, Land Use and Infrastructure Committee wore chartreuse safety vests on the House floor, identical to those worn by road crews. Road work is inherently dangerous because of the close proximity of high-speed traffic. According to DelDOT, the agency has lost 32 workers in the line-of-duty since 1933, including three deaths in 2006 alone. DelDOT Public Relations Director Darrel Cole says the Work Zone Safety Campaign is the first of a three-part public education effort. The other components, which will launch later this year, focus on pedestrian and neighborhood safety. Christina River Watershed Clean, held on Saturday, April 19th, 2008. This annual event involves constituents of the 21st District and Representative Pam Maier. The day begins with staging at Brookhaven Park.

Participation in the annual clean up started as a result of flooding from the White Clay Creek after hurricanes. Area residents are taking responsibility for keeping the creek as clear as possible to help avoid flooding problems in the future.

Workers pose with a sampling of the debris removed from the waterway. When the water rises, debris in the creek tends to accumulate under some DelDOT and railroad bridges, causing dams which cause flooding to neighborhoods that are adjacent to the creek.

Scholarship Winners Recognized
Three high schools seniors have been awarded a total of $22,500 in scholarship money after winning the Legislative Essay Scholarship Contest. The topic for the annual contest changes from year-to-year, but focuses on events, people, philosophies, technologies, governments, or ideals in American history (circa 1770 to 1860). The topic the three winning addressed was: “E Pluribus Unum: Is this motto adopted in 1782 relevant to our country today?”

Scott Falin (Tatnall School) won first place and a $10,000 scholarship; Logan Hughes (St. Thomas More Academy) took second place earning a $7,500 scholarship; and Katherine Kleinot (Glasgow High School) came in third, winning $5,000 in scholarship money. A new law will soon offer more protection to Delaware consumers. The Clean Credit and Identity Theft Prevention Act will allow Delawareans to “freeze” access to their credit files. By restricting access to this information, identity thieves will be unable to open new fraudulent lines of credit in the victim’s name. The legislation also gives an identity theft victim the right to request that a police report be prepared regarding such crimes. The bill was supported by consumer advocates, including the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP).

The Infant Mortality Task Force has delivered 20 recommendations aimed at curtailing the state’s distressingly high infant mortality rate. In 2002, Delaware recorded 9.2 deaths per thousand live births – one of the highest rates in the nation. Among the task force’s recommendations are to conduct a comprehensive review of every fetal and infant death in Delaware; create a Center for Excellence in Maternal and Child Health; and improve access to care for populations disproportionately affected by infant mortality. State Rep. Pam Maier and State Sen. Patricia Blevins have been leading proponents of taking action to reduce infant deaths in Delaware and applauded the group’s work. Gov. Minner has requested additional funding to implement some of the recommendations.
